First Nations Cultural Activities
Tuesday May 27, 2008: The K’ómoks First Nation (KFN) and Sage Hills Developments invited Bill McLennan, Pacific NorthWest Curator of the UBC Museum of Anthropology to the Comox Valley to share his intimate knowledge of the First Nations on Vancouver Island. In the morning, McLennan met with the KFN to discuss the First Nations cultural traditions of Vancouver Island while sharing his photographic references that draw on information from museums around the world. McLennan also discussed museum programs, repatriation, and education/training programs that are of interest to the KFN. After this, a luncheon was hosted by Sage Hills and the KFN at the Crown Isle along with a presentation to local political and business leaders by McLennan and Dave Russell, President of Sage Hills Developments, on the benefits of cultural and interpretive centres to the community. After lunch McLennan visited the Courtenay & District Museum & Paleontology Centre and exchanges views and information with the Museum staff.
Ted and Dave receive Indian Names
The K’ómoks First Nation (KFN) have a very sacred, very traditional practice of giving each of their members an Indian Name. Names have been passed down from generation to generation. With this tradition in mind, the KFN has, from time to time, given the white man a fun and non-traditional Indian Name. In that spirit, the KFN presented Ted Everett, Chairman of Sage Hills, with the name Siwayu which means paddle since he is the driving force pushing the project forward. Dave Russell, President of Sage Hills, is given the name Mamana which means hawk since he can fly high above yet can spot the smallest rabbit on the vast landscape below and can zero in and focus on just that rabbit.
